THE REFUGE

5 Alpini Bertarelli Refuge  (2878 m.) is located at the base of the small Zebrù Glacier, in Rio Marè Valley.  It was the first refuge built in the Ortles Cevedale Group, inaugurated in 1884 with the name of Capanna Milano;  during WWI it became  the center of the military defense of  Val Zebrù and of the war in Ortles Group. Restored  between 1919 and 1920, in 1926 it was dedicated to 5th Alpine Regiment to commemorate all the Alpines who died on this war front. Thoroughly rebuilt two years later, it was inaugurated in 1929 and in 1969 dedicated also to Guido Bertarelli, President  of our Section (1938-1945), who on these  mountains fought with his Alpines between 1915-1918.

HOW TO REACH THE REFUGE

From Bormio, take SS 300 to San Nicolò, then the road that goes up to Madonna dei Monti, crosses Plazzola fraction (1560 m) and reaches Niblogo (big parking lot).  Enter Zebrù Valley (path 29, red/white sign) and  keep walking beyond Campo Refuge and Baita del Pastore (2168m). From here the path climbs up on the left and with a series of steep bends reaches the refuge (4,30 h).
